Cake Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round baking pans by greasing and flouring them.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate large bowl, combine the buttermilk, oil, eggs, red food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined and a smooth batter forms.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cooling and Frosting
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter together in a medium bowl until light and fluffy.
- Gradually add the confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth and creamy.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, frost them generously with the cream cheese frosting.
Notes
For an extra touch, garnish with red velvet cake crumbs or fresh berries.
