Ingredients

Sweet Potato Slips
  • 1 large sweet potato for slips
  • enough water to submerge half of the potato
  • 3-4 toothpicks to suspend the potato
Transplanting
  • enough potting soil for a container
  • 1 container with drainage
  • 6-8 hours sunlight hours per day

Equipment

  • Glass jar or container
  • Toothpicks
  • Gardening container with drainage

Method

Making Slips
  1. To grow sweet potato slips, suspend a sweet potato halfway in water using toothpicks and place it in a sunny spot, refreshing the water every few days.
  2. Once the slips grow to about 6 inches with leaves and roots, gently twist them off the potato.
  3. Place the removed slips in water for a few days to further develop their roots.
Planting and Growing
  1. Plant the rooted slips in a container filled with potting soil, burying them up to the first leaves.
  2. Place the container in a sunny location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily and keep the soil consistently moist.

Notes

Sweet potatoes thrive in warm weather; ensure temperatures are consistently above 60°F (15°C) before planting outdoors. You can also plant slips directly into a garden bed if your climate is suitable. For a continuous harvest, plant new slips every few weeks. Be patient, as it takes 90-120 days for sweet potatoes to mature and be ready for harvest.
