Ingredients

Funnel Cake Batter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frying
  • 4 cups vegetable oil
For Serving
  • as needed powdered sugar

Equipment

  • large bowl
  • whisk
  • deep pot or Dutch oven
  • funnel
  • wire rack
  • paper towels

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
Combine Ingredients
  1. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
Heat Oil
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large, deep pot or Dutch oven to 375°F (190°C).
Fry Funnel Cakes
  1. Pour about 1/2 cup of batter into a funnel, then drizzle the batter into the hot oil in a circular motion, overlapping to create a web-like design. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
Serve
  1. Remove the funnel cake from the oil and place it on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter. Be sure to maintain the oil temperature for best results; too low and the funnel cake will be greasy, too high and it will burn quickly.
