  • 1 large onion
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Mixing bowls (2)
  • Whisk
  • Deep pan or pot
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Plate

Method

Preparation
  1. Slice the onion into 7 thick rings and separate them.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. In another bowl, beat the egg and then whisk in the milk to create a wet batter.
Cooking
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or pot to about 350°F (175°C).
  2. Dip each onion ring into the dry flour mixture, then into the wet batter, and finally back into the flour mixture, ensuring it's fully coated.
  3. Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying 2-3 at a time to avoid overcrowding.
  4. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Remove the onion rings with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Notes

For extra crispiness, you can double-dip the onion rings in the dry flour and wet batter.
