Ingredients
  

Basic Stuffing
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 14 ounces stuffing mix
Herb Stuffing
  • Basic Stuffing prepared as above
Mushroom & Sage Stuffing
  • Basic Stuffing prepared as above
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped
Apple & Sausage Stuffing
  • Basic Stuffing prepared as above
  • 1/2 pound ground breakfast sausage
  • 1 medium apple, diced
Cranberry & Pecan Stuffing
  • Basic Stuffing prepared as above
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup pecans, chopped

Method
 

Basic Stuffing Preparation
  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat, then add chopped celery and onion, cooking until softened.
  2. Stir in chicken broth and bring to a simmer, then remove from heat.
  3. Add the stuffing mix and toss to combine until moistened, then cover and let stand for 5 minutes.
Herb Stuffing
  1. Prepare the basic stuffing as directed, ensuring it is thoroughly mixed and moistened.
Mushroom & Sage Stuffing
  1. While preparing the basic stuffing, sauté sliced cremini mushrooms in a separate pan until tender, then stir in fresh chopped sage.
  2. Add the mushroom and sage mixture to the basic stuffing and mix well before serving.
Apple & Sausage Stuffing
  1. Cook ground breakfast sausage in a skillet until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks, then drain any excess fat.
  2. Stir in diced apple and cook until slightly softened, then combine this mixture with the basic stuffing.
Cranberry & Pecan Stuffing
  1. After preparing the basic stuffing, fold in dried cranberries and chopped pecans until evenly distributed.

Notes

For crispier stuffing, bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes after mixing. These stuffings can be prepared ahead of time and reheated. Feel free to adjust the herbs and spices to your taste. These variations are great for holidays or as a side dish with roasted meats.
