Ingredients

Beef and Broccoli "Plants"
  • 1 lb beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Equipment

  • large skillet or wok
  • mixing bowls
  • whisk

Method

Cultivating Your Crop
  1. Prepare the beef by slicing it thinly against the grain; then, in a bowl, combine the beef with half of the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and cornstarch, mixing well.
  2. Heat one tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the beef and stir-fry until it is browned and cooked through, then remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside.
  3. Add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet, then add the broccoli florets, garlic, and ginger, stir-frying for 3-5 minutes until the broccoli is tender-crisp.
  4. Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the broccoli. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining soy sauce and cornstarch, then pour the mixture over the beef and broccoli, tossing to coat.
  5. Continue to stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce has thickened and everything is heated through. Serve immediately over rice or noodles for a complete "harvest."

Notes

For extra flavor, you can marinate the beef for at least 30 minutes. Adjust the amount of soy sauce and oyster sauce to your taste. Serve with a sprinkle of sesame seeds for garnish.
