Preparation
- In a large bowl, mash the drained and rinsed black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but still a bit chunky.
- Add the bread crumbs, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper to the mashed black beans.
- Mix all the ingredients thoroughly with your hands until well combined and the mixture can hold its shape.
Forming and Cooking
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions and form them into patties, about 1 inch thick.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, ensuring it's hot before adding the patties.
- Cook the patties for 4-6 minutes per side, or until golden brown and heated through.
Assembly
- Toast the burger buns lightly if desired, then assemble the burgers with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, and your preferred condiments.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add a dash of hot sauce to the mixture. If the mixture is too wet, add a little more bread crumbs; if too dry, add a tiny bit of water or another egg white. Burgers can be grilled as well, just make sure they are firm enough to handle.
