  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 medium Onion chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 28 oz Crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz Tomato paste
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
Cheese Mixture
  • 15 oz Ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups Mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 Egg beaten
  • 0.25 cup Fresh parsley chopped
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black pepper

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Medium bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Foil

Method

Prepare the Meat Sauce
  1. Cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic in a large skillet until the meat is browned and the vegetables are tender, then drain any excess fat.
  2. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, then simmer for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Prepare the Cheese Filling
  1. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, beaten egg, fresh parsley, salt, and pepper, mixing well to combine.
Assemble the Lasagna
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C), and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, then arrange a single layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  3. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles, then top with another layer of meat sauce and a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese.
  4. Repeat the layers, ending with a final layer of noodles, meat sauce, and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
Bake the Lasagna
  1. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  2. Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving to allow it to set.

Notes

For best results, prepare the meat sauce ahead of time to allow the flavors to deepen. You can also assemble the lasagna a day in advance and refrigerate it before baking; just add an extra 10-15 minutes to the covered baking time.
