Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Cut the cold butter into small pieces and add it to the flour mixture, then use your fingers or a pastry blender to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Baking
- Gradually add the milk to the flour mixture, stirring until just combined to form a soft dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it to about 1/2-inch thickness; do not overwork the dough.
- Use a biscuit cutter or a floured glass to cut out biscuits, then place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top and cooked through; serve warm.
Notes
For extra flaky biscuits, make sure your butter is very cold. You can also brush the tops of the biscuits with a little melted butter before baking for a golden finish.
