Ingredients

Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Topping
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese (optional)

Equipment

  • large bowl
  • baking sheet
  • small bowl

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, then sprinkle in the yeast and let it proof for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the flour and salt, then mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic, then place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Forming and Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 5 equal pieces.
  3. Roll each piece into a breadstick shape, about 8-10 inches long, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Finishing
  1. While the breadsticks are baking, whisk together olive oil and garlic powder in a small bowl.
  2. Once baked, brush the warm breadsticks with the garlic oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of dried herbs like oregano or basil to the dough. Ensure your water is warm (105-115°F or 40-46°C) to activate the yeast properly. If you don't have a warm spot for rising, preheat your oven to its lowest setting for a few minutes, then turn it off and let the dough rise inside.
