Preparation
- In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar; let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy to activate the yeast.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Pour the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg into the dry ingredients and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Kneading and First Rise
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Second Rise
- Gently punch down the dough, divide it into 12 equal pieces, and shape each piece into a smooth ball.
- Arrange the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare an egg wash by whisking one egg with a tablespoon of water.
- Brush the tops of the risen rolls with the egg wash.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and cooked through.
Notes
For extra flavor, brush the hot rolls with a little melted butter immediately after taking them out of the oven.
