Growing Guacamole
- Prepare the avocado seed by washing it thoroughly and drying it gently. Insert three toothpicks evenly around the middle of the seed.
- Suspend the seed over a glass of water, ensuring the bottom third of the seed is submerged. Place the glass in a warm spot away from direct sunlight and change the water every few days.
- Once the stem is about 6-7 inches long, cut it back to about 3 inches, which encourages new growth. Wait until the stem grows back to 6-7 inches before planting.
- When the roots are thick and the stem is 6-7 inches again, plant the seed in a pot with potting soil. Leave half of the seed exposed above the soil.
- Water regularly, but do not overwater. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and continue to care for your plant as it grows, eventually yielding avocados for your guacamole.
Notes
Growing an avocado from seed can take a long time, sometimes several years, to produce fruit. Be patient and ensure proper care for the best results. A warm, sunny location is ideal for growth.
