Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Equipment

  • Oven
  • 8x8 inch baking pan
  • Large bowl
  • Whisk
  • Medium bowl
  • Wooden skewer

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking pan. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vegetable oil until well combined. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined; be careful not to overmix, as lumps are acceptable.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a golden brown color and a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Serving
  1. Once baked, remove the cornbread from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your warm, homemade cornbread!

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese or a few jalapeño slices to the batter. Serve warm with butter, honey, or a bowl of chili.
