Ingredients

For the Garlic Cultivation
  • 5 bulbs garlic cloves
  • 1 bag well-draining soil
  • as needed water
For the Hoisin Garlic Noodles
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

Equipment

  • Gardening tools (trowel, gloves)
  • Large pot
  • Large pan

Method

Cultivating Garlic
  1. Separate garlic cloves from the bulb and plant each clove, pointed end up, in well-draining soil, spaced about 4-6 inches apart.
  2. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and allow several months for the garlic to grow mature bulbs.
  3. Once the leaves start to yellow and die back, typically in summer, carefully harvest the garlic bulbs by loosening the soil around them.
Preparing Hoisin Garlic Noodles
  1. Cook egg noodles according to package directions, then drain and set aside.
  2. While noodles cook, mince the freshly harvested garlic.
  3. In a pan, sauté the minced garlic in sesame oil until fragrant.
  4. Add hoisin sauce and soy sauce to the pan, stirring to combine them with the garlic.
  5. Toss the cooked noodles in the sauce until they are fully coated.

Notes

For optimal garlic growth, plant in the fall for a summer harvest. Adjust hoisin and soy sauce to your taste preferences. You can add vegetables or protein to the noodles for a more complete meal.
