Method

Planting
  1. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil for your apple trees.
  2. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, mixing compost into the excavated soil.
  3. Carefully place the tree in the hole, ensuring the graft union is above the soil line, then backfill with the amended soil and water thoroughly.
  4. Apply a 2-4 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree, keeping it away from the trunk.
Care & Maintenance
  1. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  2. Prune your trees annually in late winter or early spring to remove dead or diseased branches and maintain an open canopy for air circulation and sunlight penetration.
  3. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer, following product instructions based on tree age and size.
  4. Monitor for pests and diseases, addressing any issues promptly with appropriate organic or chemical treatments.
Harvesting
  1. Harvest apples when they are firm, fully colored, and easily detach from the branch with a slight twist.
  2. For cider, some varieties can be harvested when slightly overripe to enhance sugar content.

Notes

Choose apple varieties specifically suited for cider production for the best results. Consider dwarf or semi-dwarf rootstocks for easier management in smaller spaces.
