Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Cook the ziti pasta according to package directions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
Make the Meat Sauce
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef or Italian sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon.
- Drain any excess fat, then add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water or beef broth, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat and let it cook for at least 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Prepare the Cheese Mixture
- In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, egg, fresh parsley, salt, and pepper.
- Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.
Assemble the Baked Ziti
- Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Add half of the cooked ziti pasta in an even layer over the sauce.
- Spoon dollops of the ricotta cheese mixture over the pasta, then spread it gently.
- Cover the cheese layer with half of the remaining meat sauce.
- Sprinkle with 1 cup of the remaining shredded mozzarella.
- Repeat the layers: remaining ziti, then the rest of the meat sauce, and finally the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
Bake
- Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil.
- Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil.
- Continue baking for another 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Serve
- Let the baked ziti rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow it to set.
- Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot.
Notes
For an extra rich flavor, try adding a splash of red wine to the meat sauce while it simmers. You can also prepare this dish ahead of time and refrigerate it before baking. Just add about 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
